Prior to the arrival of European settlers in the early 18th century, the area that would become Davidsonville was inhabited by members of the Susquehannock Nation. After colonists arrived from the north, Davidsonville grew into a sparsely populated but prosperous farming community that supported the markets in nearby population centers like Annapolis and Baltimore. From the beginning, the area was an important center of education: It houses one of the oldest publicly funded schools in the entire country. Although the area escaped the worst fighting of the Civil War, many locals did fight on both sides of the conflict. During the mid-20th century, Davidsonville grew into a prosperous exurb of Baltimore and remains so to this day.
Davidsonville is located near the geographical center of Anne Arundel County in east-central Maryland. It’s a little more than 10 miles by road from Annapolis and about 25 miles from the center of Washington, D.C. Most of the surrounding lands are semi-rural with virgin stands of pine and deciduous forest as well as working dairy and poultry farms. However, much of the area that’s commonly referred to as “Davidsonville” has been built out with low-density suburban developments. The area’s major thoroughfares include U.S. Highway 50 and Maryland Highway 214.
According to the most recently available data, Davidsonville has a population of just under 10,000. Since Davidsonville is a Census-designated place and not an incorporated city, however, there’s some confusion as to the exact extent of its boundaries. Those who use a more liberal definition can argue that up to 20,000 people live in the Davidsonville area. In any case, locals tend to be middle class families with young children as well as retirees and second-homeowners who appreciate the area’s relative quiet.
The Davidsonville area has a wealth of things to do for residents and visitors alike. For history buffs, the Free School of Anne Arundel County is among the region’s most important landmarks. It’s possible to visit the site of several Civil War skirmishes here as well. Sportsmen enjoy access to the nearby 12th Precinct Pistol and Archery Club. Meanwhile, outdoorsy types can access several private woodland tracts or bike along relatively flat, windy country roads in the surrounding communities. To the east, the Rhode River offers seemingly endless fishing opportunities. To the northwest, shopping opportunities abound at Bowie Town Center.
Like much of the rest of coastal Maryland, Davidsonville has a subtropical climate that’s influenced by strong northwest air flows as well as occasional infusions of moisture from the Atlantic Ocean. During the summer, humid and often hot conditions persist. Tropical storm activity is most likely to occur during the early fall, but direct hits on land are exceedingly rare. In the winter, frosts and freezes make it difficult to overwinter sensitive plants. The transitional seasons are marked by regular rainfall and generally mild weather.
