cooling costsWith summer temperatures heating up, Annapolis, Maryland, homeowners are planning for ways to save money on cooling costs. No matter where you live, these money-saving tips can reduce your energy costs so you save on energy bills without having to sacrifice your family’s comfort.

Program the Thermostat

Programmable thermostats are great for saving money on cooling costs. By setting your thermostat to a higher temperature during the day when the family is away, you could potentially save up to 30 percent in energy costs over the course of a year. Not every homeowner with a programmable thermostat uses it to its full potential, however, so be sure you understand how to use yours correctly to enjoy the maximum amount of savings each season.

Clean or Replace Filters

Your cooling system relies on air filters to capture dust, pet dander, and other debris and allergens. When these filters become clogged, the HVAC system has to work harder to produce an adequate amount of cooling throughout the home. We recommend (for basic filters) changing them at least once every three months for maximum air conditioning efficiency and once a month if you use it heavily, have pets, or live in very dusty conditions.

Give the Oven a Rest

Using the oven to prepare meals causes your home to heat up, resulting in your air conditioner having to work overtime. Giving the oven a break, especially during the hottest summer days, will help keep your energy bills in check. When you must use the oven, switch on the overhead ventilation as this will remove the excess heat.

Close the Shades

Keeping curtains, heavy draperies, and blinds closed during the day keeps the sun from heating up your home. While it may be tempting to open all the curtains in the morning, it’s best to leave them closed until early evening so your HVAC system doesn’t have to work harder to combat the heat gain.
