Why Is My Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air in Heating Mode?

Heat Pump Blowing Cold

Since heat pumps can function as both heating and cooling systems, many homeowners in Annapolis, MD, find them incredibly useful. However, discrepancies may sometimes arise between these two modes, causing the system to churn out cold air in heating mode (and vice versa). Here are a few reasons your heat pump is blowing cold air in heating mode:

Reversing Valve Issues

The reversing valve is what gives your heat pump the power to do double duty as both an air conditioning and a heating system. By shifting positions, the valve can control the direction in which refrigerant moves through your system. If the indoor unit acts as the condenser, it means the pump is transferring heat into your home.

If the valve remains in its cooling mode position, however, this won’t happen. You might be able to catch this before it actually happens with routine maintenance, but otherwise, a repair will be in order.

Dirty Air Filters

Dirty air filters are one of the primary reasons for weak airflow in heat pumps, and weak airflow can lead to an enormous variety of other issues. Even if your heat pump is able to generate warm air, dirty air filters may prevent that air from reaching your home. In that case, only cool air from outside may end up making it into your home.

To avoid dealing with these problems, you must remember to make sure that your air filter stays clean. To do that, check it every month and replace it as necessary, which tends to be every two to three months or so.

Refrigerant Leak

Without enough refrigerant, your heat pump will not be able to warm your home. However, since refrigerant is dangerous, you should only trust trained HVAC service technicians to stop leaks and refill your system.

If you want to stay warm in Annapolis, MD, this winter, you must make sure that your heat pump can generate and expel warm air. If your system starts cooling your home when it should be heating it, call Coastal Heating & Air Conditioning Co., Inc. to ask for our heat pump services immediately.
